# Introduction

Dtravel is a peer-to-peer vacation rental ecosystem that empowers the world to travel without the need for centralized marketplaces or third parties. Driven by a passionate community, the Dtravel ecosystem is built on the Nite Protocol and powered by its native token, TRVL.

As a progressive alternative to centralized marketplaces, Dtravel provides the infrastructure to facilitate peer-to-peer bookings. For operators, this means the ability to create new vacation rental websites and launch directly bookable listings that can process fiat and crypto bookings without intermediaries. For travelers, this means discovering and managing vacation rental bookings made directly with owners and operators. These infrastructure components interface with the Nite Protocol, bringing vacation rental data on-chain.

The [Nite Protocol](/papers/nite-protocol-litepaper) is a revolutionary approach to connectivity aimed at uniting the vacation rental industry through a common data standard. By leveraging blockchain and smart contract technology, the Nite Protocol offers a decentralized database for anyone to access and build upon.

Powering the Dtravel ecosystem is TRVL, a blockchain-based utility token. The [TRVL token](/papers/trvl-token-economics) promotes decentralization and community-driven development by incentivizing growth and adoption through meaningful reward distribution.

To actualize our vision of becoming a fully decentralized, community-owned, and operated travel ecosystem, Dtravel’s core contributors have committed to developing a sustainable Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) [governance structure](/papers/dtravel-dao-governance).

### Introduction

Since the early days of short-term rentals, travelers and property owners built relationships directly, whether through word-of-mouth recommendations or local advertisements. Guests would book stays via phone calls or pay in cash at the property, forming personal connections with the property owner.&#x20;

As technology advanced, short-term rental websites emerged, streamlining the booking process and allowing travelers to reserve properties online with ease. However, this shift led to a new challenge: market fragmentation, with operators spread across the globe, each offering different booking experiences.

This fragmentation created an opportunity for online travel agencies (OTAs) to step in. OTAs offered travelers convenience by aggregating vacation rental listings, standardizing the booking process, and making reservations seamless. While OTAs improved discoverability and booking security for guests, these benefits came at a cost - higher prices due to substantial OTA fees and a loss of direct connection between guests and property owners.

The vacation rental industry is at an inflection point and is ready to return to its roots of direct booking relationships. Shifting back toward peer-to-peer relationships will require a decentralized approach free from OTAs, and that journey starts with Dtravel.

# Problems

The short-term rental industry faces challenges related to cost, control, and trust, primarily due to overreliance on OTAs.

For travelers, rising OTA platform fees have made short-term rentals significantly more expensive while offering little added value. Despite there being hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of direct booking websites, travelers have limited options for finding these websites. Most of the time, they’re forced to rely on OTA options, which dominate search engines, AI apps, and platforms like Google Travel, leaving little room for discovering more affordable, direct options.

As a result, many travelers resort to combing through WhatsApp and Facebook groups in a time-consuming and often frustrating effort to find better deals. However, these fragmented methods lead to a low rate of direct bookings, driving travelers back to OTAs, where they face higher prices and less control over their stay experience.

Short-term rental operators also suffer from a lack of control. OTAs enforce policies that can override operators' own terms and conditions, as seen during the [COVID-19 pandemic](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/19/coronavirus-airbnb-hosts-angry-at-refunds.html). This dependency leaves both operators and travelers vulnerable, with operators feeling disempowered and travelers often left at the mercy of rigid platform policies.

Trust, once a foundational element of vacation rentals, has weakened. OTAs initially fostered trust by serving as intermediaries, but increasingly one-sided policies have created mistrust between guests and short-term rental operators. Both parties feel unsupported, as OTAs often seem to side with the other party in disputes. The presence of bad actors further erodes confidence, making the experience less personal and more transactional.

On top of this, operators lack the sophisticated tools needed to scale direct booking businesses. Without diverse payment options, rewards programs, or reliable trust-building features, direct booking sites struggle to compete. Additionally, the vast marketing budgets and global reach of OTAs further stifle the visibility of independent operators, making it nearly impossible for travelers to find and book directly, even if they want to.

To address these challenges, the industry must provide both travelers and operators with better alternatives to OTAs. Empowering operators with the right tools will not only improve the booking experience but also offer travelers the opportunity to find affordable, direct booking options with the trust and convenience they deserve.

# Solutions

The solution to the challenges facing the short-term rental industry lies in direct bookings—where guests can book directly with property owners or managers, eliminating the need for costly intermediaries like OTAs. As long as platforms control the terms and conditions of bookings, travelers will continue to face inflated prices, while vacation rental operators earn less profit and have less control over their bookings. Direct bookings offer a better alternative for both travelers and operators by removing the middleman and lowering costs.&#x20;

In recent years, the desire for direct bookings has surged. Between 2016 and 2021, direct bookings increased from just 2.29% of all short-term rental bookings to 21.75%, a staggering +900% rise. This growth reflects the rising demand from travelers to book directly with operators, avoiding high OTA fees.&#x20;

This trend aligns with innovations in web3 technology, which shares a core principle of decentralization and ownership. We believe the "book direct" movement is inherently a web3 movement, and Dtravel is leading the charge by making direct bookings more accessible and beneficial for travelers and short-term rental operators alike.

# What is Dtravel?

Dtravel is a Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) for vacation rentals with a token model to incentivize growth and reward participants who engage in peer-to-peer short-term rental bookings.

At the heart of Dtravel’s ecosystem lies the [Nite Protocol](https://docs.dtravel.com/papers/nite-protocol-litepaper), an open-source, decentralized onchain data standard, designed alongside industry incumbents and crafted specifically for the vacation rental industry. The protocol tokenizes bookings into Real World Assets (RWAs) on the Base blockchain, providing a publicly accessible database for anyone to access and build upon.&#x20;

All products within the Dtravel ecosystem are built on the Nite Protocol and include:

### For Travelers

#### Metasearch

The Dtravel Metasearch allows travelers to bypass traditional intermediaries and find vacation rentals they can book directly with property owners and managers. Built using the Nite Protocol data standard, search queries display listings that are owned or controlled by vacation rental operators themselves rather than OTAs. Insead of booking through Dtravel, travelers and property owners exchange value peer-to-peer. This model eliminates the costly fees associated with centralized marketplaces.&#x20;

#### AI Search

Leveraging multiple data sources, including the Nite Protocol data standard, Dtravel’s AI Search opens up new possibilities for how travelers can discover, book, and pay for vacation rentals. By using AI, travelers can create personalized travel profiles that consider their preferences, past trips, and travel goals. This allows Dtravel’s AI Search to deliver tailored vacation rental recommendations, streamline the booking process, and offer flexible payment options, including cryptocurrency, ensuring a seamless and efficient travel planning experience.

### For Operators&#x20;

#### Onchain Listings

By adopting the Nite Protocol data standard, property owners and managers can ensure their listings are discoverable through apps like Dtravel’s Metasearch. This means, vacation rental operators with an existing direct booking site can bring their business onchain, benefit from enhanced visibility and attract digital nomads and crypto travelers by interfacing with the Nite Protocol.

For operators only using centralized marketplaces and those without existing direct booking infrastructure, Dtravel makes it easy to create standalone onchain listings or a complete direct booking site. In a matter of minutes, a property owner can connect their Airbnb or property management system (PMS) account, sync their calendar and start processing bookings peer-to-peer. Unlike OTAs, listings created through Dtravel empower vacation rental operators with control over their business, data, and reputation.

#### Crypto Payments

Dtravel makes it easy for vacation rental operators to embrace cryptocurrency payments by offering a seamless and user-friendly experience. Operators using Dtravel for their direct booking listings or site can create a SmartWallet using just their email, eliminating the complexities typically associated with blockchain technology. Using the Smart Wallets, they can start accepting cryptocurrencies and also earn giveback rewards for bookings.&#x20;

\
Operators with an existing direct booking site can still enable crypto payments easily using Dtravel’s crypto payment widget which interfaces with the Nite Protocol to tokenize the stays and distribute the listings to the metasearch.&#x20;

For operators who prefer not to handle cryptocurrency directly, Dtravel offers a convenient crypto-to-fiat conversion feature, ensuring payments can be automatically converted into local currency. This flexibility allows operators to benefit from the growing demand for crypto payments without the need for in-depth blockchain or cryptocurrency knowledge.

### For Travelers & Operators

#### Onchain Reputation

Dtravel’s onchain reputation system offers a transparent and secure way for both travelers and vacation rental operators to build, own and maintain their reputations within the ecosystem. Every booking, review, and interaction is recorded on the blockchain, creating a verifiable history of trustworthiness and reliability. For travelers, this means their positive behavior and reviews follow them across different stays, making it easier to create trust. Similarly, vacation rental operators can establish a credible reputation based on their responsiveness, hospitality, and quality of accommodations, attracting more direct bookings.&#x20;

# TRVL Token

OTAs compete fiercely with one another and are obligated to maximize value for their shareholders. This has resulted in closed systems that concentrate most of the value with early shareholders at the expense of OTA users like travelers and operators.

As user-created value becomes more common, the next step is towards software that’s built, operated, and owned by users. While web2 platforms are designed to extract value from users, web3 equivalents create value for users. This is the ownership economy, in which platforms can leverage incentives to create network effects and a self-sustaining cycle over time.

The travel industry is well suited to the ownership economy because everyone in the world can potentially be a traveler or travel operator. In the Dtravel ecosystem, ownership is represented by TRVL.

The TRVL token plays three main roles within Dtravel:

* Staking - enhances the value of using Dtravel and generates additional rewards for TRVL holders who lock their tokens.
* Currency for travel - when used for payments, TRVL unlocks discounts inside Dtravel.
* Governance - used for creating and voting on proposals, and for choosing protocol and tokenomic parameters.

Please see [TRVL Tokenomics](https://docs.dtravel.com/papers/trvl-token-economics) for more information.

# Nite Protocol Litepaper

Updated Feb 29, 2024. This is an evolving document and will be updated regularly.

### Executive Summary

Excessive fees, fueled by a complex web of intermediaries and a lack of transparency, are stifling the innovation potential of a rapidly growing vacation rental industry. These challenges are rooted in centralized data silos that prevent efficiency and hinder seamless communication across the entire ecosystem.&#x20;

The Nite Protocol, an open standard protocol for the vacation rental industry, is a collective opportunity and open invitation to solve these problems. Emergent technology can address challenges at three levels: infrastructure, services, and booking transactions, which collectively will provide an open and accessible source of truth that enables direct connectivity, efficiency, and new opportunities for all industry participants. Most importantly, any company can access and build upon the Nite Protocol.

Collective ownership is critical to the industry-wide adoption of the Nite Protocol. The Nite Protocol will utilize TRVL, a blockchain-based utility token, to enable fair and open participation through shared governance. In addition, the TRVL token will also be used to incentivize growth by rewarding participants who contribute time and resources to the protocol.

The future of the industry depends on openness and collaboration. Those who join forces to adopt and build the Nite Protocol have a unique opportunity to reduce costs, increase choice, fuel innovation, and lead the industry to a path that benefits all stakeholders.

# Problems

There are two critical challenges facing the vacation rental industry - (1) lack of data standardization and (2) closed systems - that have collectively shaped the industry's landscape. If these challenges can be addressed holistically, it will help usher in a new era of innovation and enhance the experiences of both operators and travelers while reducing costs across the industry.&#x20;

## Lack of Data Standardization

Technology providers serve many different roles within the vacation rental industry, such as Property Management Systems (PMSs), Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) like Airbnb and Booking.com, Channel Managers (CMs), Pricing Tools, and much more. Each provider has different ways of referencing and describing vacation rental properties and their attributes.&#x20;

This lack of standardized language and data has led to non-standardized APIs and disagreements on fundamental data definitions all industry participants rely upon. Fragmentation hinders seamless communication and integration between platforms, leading to inefficiencies and misunderstandings between systems.

> “Because APIs are not standardized, the complexity, learning curve, and expense of implementing and maintaining API-driven connections with software systems create a significant barrier to entry for emerging third-party technology companies.” - VRMIntel

## Closed Systems

Each participant within the industry has their own siloed software that stores duplicative listings, reservations, pricing, and data relevant to their customers. This causes three significant issues - (1) connectivity overhead, complexity, and cost; (2) lack of interoperability across the industry; and (3) lack of innovation.&#x20;

### **Connectivity Challenges**

Each of these systems forms its own data silos, and to get access, they must build expensive, time-consuming integrations with each other. Initially, connectivity to specific providers, especially the large OTAs like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Vrbo, used to be a competitive advantage.&#x20;

However, as these platforms have risen in dominance, connectivity to each is now a minimum requirement and no longer a competitive advantage. Yet software providers must still spend a lot of their resources building and maintaining each connection as well as continuously adding new connections to new providers. This investment doesn't further their core business and is instead an ever-increasing business cost that everyone in the industry must bear, and that is ultimately passed down to end consumers.

### **Lack of Interoperability**

Because access to these systems is closed and permissioned, there's a lack of data transference and interoperability across the industry. Data is spread across multiple companies with little portability or control, resulting in numerous costly inefficiencies for both operators and travelers. Worse, it inhibits trust across the industry because every time an end user moves to a different platform, they must start anew. A host must create new duplicative listings on every platform and rebuild their online reputation. A new guest has no verified travel history or reputation to share with a host, all of which diminishes trust and wastes time as all parties invest time managing and rebuilding reputation over and again.&#x20;

### Lack of Innovation

This degraded trust also impacts travel technology providers. Data silos and OTAs' walled gardens reinforce a competitive rather than collaborative mindset. The dominance of OTAs in distribution exerts significant control over the industry, resulting in high commissions, limited accessibility to their APIs, and reduced choices for both operators and travelers. This dominance stifles the influence of startups and innovators striving to enhance the vacation rental experience that could benefit the entire industry.

# Solutions

Implementing an open standard protocol, a set of standardized procedures for transmitting and storing data, called the Nite Protocol, offers solutions to the issues facing the vacation rental industry. Rather than the current state where providers have to build many connections to each other, the Nite Protocol will act as a single API connection that anyone can read and write listing and booking data to, eliminating the need to build so many duplicative, expensive, and unnecessary API connections.&#x20;

By championing principles of openness, collaboration, decentralization, and the utilization of cutting-edge technologies such as blockchains and smart contracts, the Nite Protocol solves the problems of a lack of data standardization and closed systems, eliminating much of the expensive overhead of API connectivity, which in turn reduces costs for end consumers.

## A Unified Source of Truth

The Nite Protocol uses a common language and data structure that the industry will work together to create and improve. A common language will eliminate the need to translate data from one source to another, creating efficiencies for participants and allowing them to focus on adding value to their core business.&#x20;

The Nite Protocol is a decentralized hub for vacation rental data and booking processes, which any company can leverage and build upon. This arrangement reduces the redundancy of data stored across multiple centralized databases and mitigates integration challenges due to a lack of data standards across incompatible APIs. It effectively dismantles the isolated data silos, thus creating a cohesive system where data is transparent, accurate, and accessible to all industry participants, significantly reducing the costs of building within the industry.&#x20;

## Open Protocol

The Nite Protocol opens the doors to a surge of innovation by empowering startups and technology companies to access vacation rental supply and develop novel experiences that optimize user experience instead of spending their time integrating inefficient infrastructure. It will also enable participants who provide data access to turn their current cost centers (storage of data) into profit centers by getting paid network fees for data access.&#x20;

The open-source nature of the protocol fuels inventive solutions to longstanding issues such as reputation portability, personalization, and payment methods. This paves the way for a more dynamic and consumer-centric travel industry that continuously evolves and adapts to the needs of travelers.

An open protocol introduces a community-driven governance system to the vacation rental industry, ensuring no single entity controls the protocol. This approach fosters an open market, accelerates development, and maintains vital checks and balances. This decentralized model levels the playing field, offering transparent, equitable participation for all, from established players to startups.&#x20;

# Protocol Design

The Nite Protocol has three main components:

1. Nite Token (Nites): A smart-contract standard to represent property-nights as tokens on blockchains.
2. Dusk: An industry-driven, flexible, general, simple, and future-proof domain-specific knowledge representation language (DSL) to describe real-estate properties and their rental conditions.
3. Nite Interface: Allows vacation rental operators to both create digital wallets and sync their property data to the Nite Protocol.&#x20;

The above components comprise a system that ingests vacation rental property data, which vacation rental operators are then able to share with applications such as OTAs, PMSs, analytics engines, aggregators, search engines, reputation explorers, or any application connected to the protocol for whom that data is relevant. Permission to access the listing data is controlled by the vacation rental owner or manager.&#x20;

# Nite Token (Nites): A Standardized Representation of a Booking

Currently, the vacation rental industry suffers from a lack of shared agreement on the definition of the foundational aspects of the industry, such as how even to define a booking.&#x20;

Each Nite Token (Nite) represents a booked night at a specific property. It gives its holder the right to spend that night in the property. Buying the Nites for particular dates, a traveler is booking a property for the nights in that date range.&#x20;

Nites are a form of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) - they're unique and cannot be substituted as each Nite is specific to a specific property room night. For compliance and ease of adoption, the Nite standard extends the ERC721 NFT standard, which is the most well-known and widely used.

Importantly, by implementing the ERC721 standard's interfaces, NT contracts allow vacation rental operators to approve third parties to transfer tokens on their behalf. Therefore, vacation rental operators can authorize external platforms (such as property management systems, online travel agencies, token exchanges, marketplaces, direct booking sites, and, generally, any kind of distribution channel) to transfer tokens to travelers who make bookings through their platforms. The vacation rental operators can also revoke the authorizations to transfer tokens at any time.

Every property has its own deployed NT contract. This contract can be deployed to any EVM-compatible blockchain. It's not necessary for all contracts to be deployed to the same blockchain. However, to ensure a single source of truth, every property will have only one deployed contract.

Using this approach, whether a night is booked can be determined by checking whether the corresponding token is owned by someone other than the property manager. Furthermore, whether a night is available through a given operator depends on whether the current token owner authorized the operator to transfer the token on their behalf. All this information is public on the Nite Protocol.

# Dusk: The Unifying Language for the Vacation Rental Industry

A domain-specific language (DSL) is a programming language with a higher level of abstraction optimized for a specific class of problems and uses the concepts and rules from the field or domain. It’s meant to be used by industry participants who are knowledgeable in the domain the DSL addresses rather than meant to be used as a more general programming language.&#x20;

Dusk is a domain-specific knowledge representation language to describe real-estate properties and their rental conditions. As a unifying language, it allows our industry to communicate more efficiently without wasting resources translating from one language to another when communicating and sharing listing and booking data. To succeed in being a unifying language, the DSL needs to be simple and yet expressive enough to cover everything that our industry may want to express.

The intention behind Dusk is for it to be:

#### Collaborative and Industry-Driven

Rather than being yet another "standard" produced by just one entity and hardly adopted by any other entity, Dusk is the result of a collaboration between multiple entities in our industry, committed to creating a standard that suits their needs and adopting it to enjoy its benefits.

#### General and Simple

Dusk is capable of expressing a very wide array of rate rules, cancellation rules and other rules that are relevant in a vacation rental context, but its generality does not result in a more complex language.

#### Standards-Compatible

Dusk adopts widely used standards for representing dates, currencies, and languages. This eases the adoption of Dusk itself since libraries for the widely used standards are easier to find and use.

#### Legacy-Compatible and Future-Proof

By focusing on the semantics of the abstract data types for the representation of properties and not on the syntactic details, Dusk is both past and future-compatible. The data can be written in XML, JSON or any other syntactic format. It can be stored in a database, in a smart contract on-chain or using a decentralized off-chain storage solution. It can be served through a traditional REST API endpoint, through a GraphQL query or through \`web3.js\` call to a view function in a contract. The popularity of these different technologies will rise and fall with time, and new technologies will appear, but Dusk's data types will endure because they focus on inherent information about properties.

The data types include information about rates and rate rules (discounts and surcharges, taxes, fees), cancellation rules, availability and availability rules, house rules, and descriptions of the property's characteristics (including photos and videos).&#x20;

**Nite Interfaces: Gateways to Enhanced Data Control**

Nite Interfaces are applications (apps) and decentralized applications (dApps) that will use the Nite Protocol and offer an onramp for their users to the Protocol. Doing so will give vacation rental operators increased ownership and control over their data instead of the data being siloed on a specific platform as it is today. Any existing or new business can adopt the Nite Protocol and create a Nite Interface to interact with the protocol.&#x20;

The first Nite Interface to the Nite Protocol is [Dtravel Direct](https://www.dtravel.com/operators/dtravel-direct), the first project to validate the protocol. The path for operators to onboard and use the Nite Protocol via Dtravel Direct is the following:

1. Supply managers (i.e. PMSs and Channel Managers) connect to Dtravel Direct
2. Operators (i.e., Property managers, owners, and hosts) onboard to Dtravel Direct and create a digital wallet
3. Operators provide read-only access via their supply managers&#x20;
4. Operators select payment types and networks&#x20;
5. Operators deploy their Nite Protocol smart contracts on their preferred network
6. Operators activate crypto payments and get a crypto checkout option on their existing direct booking website
7. Operators receive crypto for bookings, and the traveler has the option to claim the Nites, or it’s held in the property manager’s wallet on behalf of the traveler
8. All transaction data is recorded on-chain&#x20;

Once a property manager or owner is onboarded to Dtravel Direct, a traveler will simply see a crypto checkout option on a property manager's existing direct booking website.&#x20;

In the future, there will be other Nite Interfaces that allow property managers and connectivity partners to onboard to the Nite Protocol.

# How This is Different from Web2 Systems Today

Today, connectivity between vacation rental applications occurs through thousands of APIs. API and data structures differ widely between applications. The result is that connecting to a new application is costly. The cost manifests in lengthy development cycles, maintenance to keep APIs functioning, and ultimately less connectivity between applications. In an ideal world, vacation rental applications would align around a single data standard everyone can benefit from. This can be realized through the Nite Protocol.

# TRVL Token: Promoting Nite Protocol Decentralization

TRVL is the utility token powering the Nite Protocol. TRVL prevents centralization of the Nite Protocol by distributing control to active participants.

## Background

The importance of decentralization to protocols cannot be understated. The centralized structure of traditional companies relies on a board or a single leader to decide the platform's future. This introduces a range of potentially fatal issues when it comes to longevity, key person risk, security, misaligned incentives, and regulatory capture issues.

Thankfully, there are ways to combat such issues through decentralizing control. Decentralizing a protocol can be enabled when community members have decision-making authority and a financial incentive to contribute time and resources.

We believe the best way to encourage decentralization is through blockchain-based tokens. The TRVL token will have an important role in decentralizing control. Instead of a few people controlling the direction of the protocol, the community will decide on future developments of the protocol.

The benefits of using TRVL within the Nite Protocol are:

* Incentivize users to contribute to the Nite Protocol and improve the protocol's operations
* Balanced control and no single points of failure
* Checks and balances for capital allocation and future developments
* Knowledge sharing and enabling the free market to accelerate adoption

All of the previous benefits are made possible through decentralized governance and decision-making.

## Governance and Decision-Making

The Nite Protocol will utilize TRVL tokens for governance purposes. TRVL token holders can propose and vote on protocol upgrades, changes, and decisions. This democratic approach empowers the community to collectively steer the protocol's evolution, ensuring that it remains aligned with the needs and desires of its stakeholders.

By allowing TRVL holders to vote on proposals, upgrades, and changes (both product and funding-related), the Nite Protocol will foster a decentralized governance model. This ensures that the community has a voice in the project's direction and can prevent centralization. As a result, TRVL holders can introduce new proposals for protocol improvements and participate in decision-making processes.

The proposed governance structure of the Nite Protocol will be shared separately.

# Benefits of Using TRVL in the Nite Protocol

## Distribution Access

Third-party applications can access the Nite Protocol API by paying in stablecoins or TRVL to query and distribute property data. The amount paid by third-party applications is based on the amount of properties queried and the source of properties queried.

Operators can put a price on access to listings they manage; this includes free access. If access is paid, operators split the earnings with integration partners they are connected to and the Nite Protocol. Integration partners can stake TRVL to improve their share of earnings. Integration partners will also have to stake TRVL as a form of security guarantee for their honest behavior in validating legitimate listings and bookings.

After receiving access to property listings, third-party applications can charge transaction fees for successful bookings. Operators will know how much the third-party application intends to charge before getting access to their listing data.

## Incentivizing Cryptocurrency Transactions

The first of many on-ramps to the Nite Protocol will be Dtravel Direct. Dtravel Direct has a payments smart contract that automates the flow of funds from a cryptocurrency booking. When a guest sends cryptocurrency for a payment, 97% goes to the operator, and 3% goes to the Community Treasury.

If the payment is made in TRVL, the operator and traveler get a fee discount. If the payment is made in other cryptocurrencies, the other cryptocurrencies are swapped for TRVL and then deposited into the Community Treasury.

Partners who integrate Dtravel Direct and have operators process crypto transactions can earn a share of the treasury fee. Partners who stake TRVL can increase their percentage of the revenue share from crypto transactions.

## Gas/Usage Fees

Gas fees are paid each time new Nite Tokens are minted, property data is updated, or property data is queried. The Nite Protocol will earn a margin over the cost of gas fees on the network where the Nite Tokens are minted. If gas fees are paid in TRVL, there will be a discount on gas fees paid.

## Financial Primitives

Royalties for trading Nite Tokens, lending and borrowing Nite Tokens, and selling rights to future booking cash flows.

## Developer Incentives

TRVL tokens will be used to incentivize participants within the protocol's ecosystem. This includes developers, contributors, users, and more. By rewarding these participants with TRVL tokens for their contributions (such as code development, bug reporting, content creation, etc.), Nite Protocol will foster an active and engaged community that collectively works towards the protocol's success. Nite Protocol Developer Incentive grants will be decided by the Dtravel Representative Council and shared with the community.

# New Possibilities that the Nite Protocol Enables

Through the Nite Protocol, the integration of blockchain technology into the vacation rental space creates a new era of opportunity and empowerment for vacation rental operators and travelers.

Operators gain unprecedented control over their data by placing property listings and availability on the blockchain, unlocking the potential to charge third parties for access directly. This not only places the power back in the hands of the property owners but also opens up unparalleled distribution and marketing avenues for their listings.

Furthermore, vacation rental operators can enhance their offerings by incorporating listings from other operators into their websites, broadening the diversity of properties available to potential guests. This increased control and flexibility in managing and marketing their properties will reduce dependency on centralized channels and, ultimately, a more competitive market, benefiting operators and travelers alike.

Lastly, the Nite Protocol redefines what “trust” means in the vacation rental space, moving away from centralized marketplaces and their misaligned and inadequate protection policies to having operators rely on their on-chain track record as a trust signal to travelers - in addition to a more balanced protection policies. Completed bookings, payments received, and property information can be shown to prospective travelers (and other interested parties), providing confidence of legitimacy for peer-to-peer bookings.

Conversely, democratizing access to listing data enabled through the Nite Protocol lowers the barriers for third-party applications and individuals aiming to enter the vacation rental space. These entities can market and distribute listings by paying a fee to access this data, earning commission fees on bookings they facilitate.

This model mirrors the transformative impact seen in the e-commerce sector with the advent of dropshipping and platforms like Shopify, which significantly simplified the process of starting an online business.

The potential for innovation in search and curation methods is vast, promising to introduce new ways for travelers to discover and book accommodations. This future scenario not only enhances the visibility of vacation rentals but also opens the opportunity for money-making opportunities never seen before.

# Why Adopt the Nite Protocol

Any traveler, operator, or builder might ask, "*Why should I care about the Nite Protocol*? And "*Even if I care, why should I invest in its adoption?* "

These are fair questions. The short answer is that if you're frustrated with the state of the travel industry as a builder, host, or traveler, you can now do something about it while having shared ownership in the future success of the Nite Protocol.

Here's the longer answer. Today, there are too many barriers to entry for startup innovators to gain traction and compete with incumbent OTAs using web2 business models. Fortunately, emergent technology enables new opportunities that are proven disruptors.

DePIN stands for **De**centralized **P**hysical **I**nfrastructure **N**etwork. It's an innovative way to build and maintain physical infrastructure networks. DePINs help overcome the financial and logistical barriers to entry created by incumbents in two ways:

1. Crowdsource the cost of creating a shared peer-to-peer network; and
2. Use public blockchains to coordinate the actions of contributors globally toward what is best for the network.

Generally, DePINs overcompensate their first set of contributors because they take more risk and have an outsized impact on early growth. Using this incentives-driven approach, DePINs create significant supply capacity that benefits end-consumers by reducing costs, creating innovative use cases, and building a more robust, decentralized infrastructure. This model has proven successful in IoT ([Helium](https://www.helium.com/)), cloud storage ([Filecoin](https://filecoin.io/)), mapping technology ([Hivemapper](https://hivemapper.com/explorer)), and many other use cases.\
\
Likewise, the supply-side network is the key to unlocking value and innovation across the vacation rental sector. By collectively increasing the number of suppliers using the Nite Protocol, it will enable collective innovation and market penetration that might not otherwise be feasible. Every new open-source listing makes a difference in creating an open network around the Nite Protocol. Each on-chain reservation adds value, and the earliest contributors will have an outsized opportunity to make an impact.

# How Dtravel Will Support the Protocol

Dtravel contributors will play a coordinating role in the evolution and continuous enhancement of the Nite Protocol alongside all industry players who will utilize the protocol to increase the efficiency of their businesses. Our role encompasses various aspects aimed at fostering the growth and robustness of the protocol.

Firstly, Dtravel will actively support community-driven initiatives that refine and advance the protocol's capabilities. We believe in the power of collaborative efforts and are currently working closely with industry partners to design the protocol architecture and formulate the foundational smart contracts.

Our commitment includes the developer community by providing comprehensive developer frameworks, educational materials, and tutorials to encourage third-party contributions and innovations. Some initiatives will earn TRVL token grants from the Growth Fund.

Along with the above efforts, Dtravel is dedicated to helping drive widespread adoption of the protocol across the industry, ushering in a new era of decentralized travel. Notably, Dtravel Direct is already the first to showcase the practical application of this revolutionary technology within the vacation rental industry through the [v3 booking contract upgrade](https://dtravel.com/blog/dtravel-is-bringing-rwas-to-polygon-pos-with-its-v3-smart-contract-upgrade/).

# Dtravel DAO Governance

Updated March 8, 2024. This is an evolving document and will be updated regularly.

## Introduction&#x20;

What makes Dtravel different from web2 travel companies is our vision to empower ownership in travel. This means ownership in the ecosystem as well as the right to vote. We laid the groundwork for our vision by first building a robust product, Dtravel Direct, and fostering a community of satisfied vacation rental owners and operators who recognize the pivotal role Dtravel plays in the success of their businesses. Working closely with these community members, we gathered their feedback and built an innovative offering that has already won us recognition in the vacation rental industry. Going forward, we’ll continue to work with the Dtravel operator community on improving the Dtravel Direct app,while we focus on launching and getting feedback on the Dtravel Explorer app, a new product aimed at facilitating search and TRVL growth campaigns.&#x20;

Community feedback is pivotal to our continued success and we’re excited to share that TRVL holders now have the opportunity to actively participate in decision-making and voice their opinion on different proposals that affect the Dtravel ecosystem.

Community members will be able to exercise their voting rights, influencing Dtravel's roadmap and weighing in on proposals that impact the Dtravel ecosystem. This document sets out how governance will be structured and evolve over time and how community members can participate in governance.

This governance guide is a high level overview and is a living document that will evolve and improve as and when required and also through the community’s input and feedback.

# Our Guiding Principles

These are the guiding principles we’ve taken when creating this governance framework.

### Long Term Sustainability

Executing Dtravel’s mission and vision isn’t a three or five year vision. It’s a 20+ year vision and this long term horizon demands that sustainability is at the core of all decisions. While it’s tempting and easy in web3 to optimize for short term decision making, Dtravel is committed to being here for the long run and has already outlasted many projects that only optimized for short term results. This is why we’re thoughtful about the implications today’s decisions will have on the future. &#x20;

To ensure the continued sustainability of the entire ecosystem, all proposals and initiatives are created with an iterative approach where we can learn and adjust as needed rather than having monolithic plans that are impossible to change or are hard to sustain in the long run. This can sometimes feel at odds with how other projects operate but we’ve had the fortune of learning from other projects (good and bad) and know that in the long term, a responsible, thoughtful and mathematically sound approach is longer lasting than any flashy trends.

### Responsible Progressive Decentralization

Decentralization doesn’t happen overnight. It’s been proven with many projects that in the early days, the best governance structure is a small group of people with subject matter expertise and passion who work together and move quickly and act decisively in the early days to ensure that progress is being made. At the same time, more proposals will gradually be put forth for community voting, especially as we have more teams and individuals working within the Dtravel ecosystem, which will reduce the dependency on any one team being critical to the ecosystem’s success and longevity, fulfilling the goal of the ecosystem’s decentralization.&#x20;

### Distributed Ownership

To truly realize decentralization, ownership has to be distributed to many people, especially those who contribute value to the Dtravel ecosystem. Related to the principle of long term sustainability, it’s also important that we provide ways to continue to distribute ownership over time to as many people as possible contributing to the Dtravel ecosystem so that ownership and control isn’t too concentrated with any one person or group of people.

# Contributing Teams

### Newstart (Non-Technical)

Newstart is a contributing company to the Dtravel ecosystem. The team is made up of travel and short term rental professionals and operators, digital nomads, crypto travelers, blockchain experts and web3 natives.&#x20;

Newstart is responsible for:

* Product
* Design
* Operations
* Sales, business development and partnerships
* Marketing and growth
* Community engagement and management&#x20;
* Customer service and support

While Newstart has played an early role in the non-technical development of the Dtravel ecosystem, over time there will be many other teams and individuals contributing in various capacities.

### Blocktech Labs (Technical)

Blocktech Labs works with Newstart to build products and features within the Dtravel ecosystem.&#x20;

Blocktech Labs is responsible for:

* Development of Dtravel’s ecosystem products
* Maintenance and improvement to existing products
* Security of core products

While initially there is currently one core technical team, over time there will be multiple technical teams and individuals making contributions to the Dtravel ecosystem.&#x20;

# How Community Members Can Vote

We’ll be using Snapshot for governance votes. [Snapshot](https://snapshot.org/#/) is a free to use voting platform that allows web3 communities to easily vote without gas fees using the tokens that are held by community members in their wallets, even if those tokens are staked.&#x20;

# How does Snapshot work?

There are three key elements that are involved in the voting process: spaces, proposals and votes. Proposals and votes are associated with a space, in this case the Dtravel space. To start, the Dtravel team will submit proposals on the community’s behalf based on the discussions and suggestions and in the near future, we’ll be enabling community members to put forth proposals.

# Why is Dtravel using Snapshot?

Snapshot is the most commonly used tool for governance and voting for web3 projects. It allows community members to easily vote on proposals by verifying they have the voting rights to a specific proposal which can be just tokens or a combination of tokens and another requirement such as having your digital wallet address whitelisted.

# Dtravel Snapshot

The Dtravel Snapshot is dedicated to proposals involving Dtravel. In order to participate in Dtravel related proposals, you must hold a balance of 500 TRVL and be a current Dtravel community member. Soft proposals will be put forth for discussion and the Dtravel team will put together a formal proposal based on the discussion and feedback.

Examples of Dtravel proposals:

* Proposal Process and proposal templates
* How the Dtravel DAO will be governed (e.g. through a Council)
* Council composition and selection (dependent on the above)
* Tokenomics parameters
* Growth campaigns

These are some examples but as the community provides feedback on what type of proposals they’d like to see, more will be added. The initial proposals will be focused on formalizing a lot of the governance framework and processes to set up the Dtravel DAO.

# How do community members use Snapshot for voting?

1. Visit the Dtravel Space: <https://snapshot.org/#/dtraveldao.eth>
2. Click the Connect wallet button in the top right corner.
3. Connect with the wallet provider where you hold your TRVL tokens (either ERC20 or BEP20).
4. Select the active proposal you’re interested in.
5. Select the option(s) you want to vote for (the voting systems can vary from proposal to proposal).
6. Click the Vote button and sign the message via your wallet provider when prompted.
7. You’ve now contributed to Dtravel and TRVL governance 🎉.

# TRVL Token Economics

Updated March 14, 2024. This is an evolving document and will be updated regularly.

## Overview

Bitcoin is widely recognized as the world’s first peer-to-peer electronic payment system, enabling any two parties to transact without intermediaries. In effect, holding BTC symbolizes activism to move beyond the traditional banking system.&#x20;

Similarly, Dtravel is empowering the world with the ability to travel without the need for centralized marketplaces or third parties. The TRVL token enables a movement beyond mainstream online travel agencies (OTAs). Like Bitcoin, Dtravel incentivizes growth of its peer-to-peer vacation rental ecosystem by distributing rewards to those contributing the resources required to secure and grow the ecosystem.&#x20;

The dominance of major online travel agencies (OTAs) in the vacation rental industry brings various challenges. Centralized platforms not only impose hefty fees and exert outsized control over users, but their objective to appease shareholders leads to one-sided dispute resolutions and policy changes that punish users economically.

Despite users playing a crucial role in building platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo and Booking.com, they're not given a stake or a voice in development, leading to a market lacking innovation and diversity, and a community feeling undervalued and voiceless.

Dtravel’s peer-to-peer travel ecosystem is a progressive alternative to the centralized platform model, made possible by TRVL. The TRVL token promotes decentralization and community-driven development by incentivizing growth and adoption through meaningful reward distribution.

This paper explains how Dtravel is using TRVL to transform the vacation rental industry. It reintroduces the purpose of TRVL within the Dtravel ecosystem and a new token model that clearly demonstrates long term growth for TRVL holders.

# Why is TRVL Critical to the Success of Dtravel?

The vacation rental sector stands out within the travel industry because of its origin as a grassroots community of individuals eager to open their homes to travelers. In contrast to hotels, vacation rentals offer travelers a unique local experience. Hosts banded together to enrich their offerings and further distinguish the experience from hotels, forming local groups to exchange tips and best practices. Today, this same community spirit remains strong and is a defining characteristic of the vacation rental space.&#x20;

Dtravel is building upon this same passion for community, expanding it to anyone interested in vacation rentals while giving people opportunities to earn rewards proportionate to their contributions. The vehicle to do this is through TRVL.

Any network faces the "cold start" challenge - initiating and scaling up growth from the outset. While both operators and travelers are unhappy with current vacation rental platform options, breaking this habit of using these platforms requires an appealing reason to do so. This is why TRVL is critical to the success of Dtravel.&#x20;

It's the tool necessary for bootstrapping adoption and incentivizing the growth of the Dtravel network. By offering rewards for the earliest value drivers—an operator utilizing a Dtravel-powered website, a traveler securing a booking, or a community member generating referrals—TRVL is the key to creating a network effect within the Dtravel ecosystem.&#x20;

Central to this concept is that TRVL rewards embody ownership, granting holders the power to shape the ecosystem's future trajectory. This alignment of interests ensures that an individual's success translates into collective prosperity, creating a win-win scenario for all involved.

# Why is Dtravel Critical to the Success of TRVL?

The short-term rental market is worth an estimated $83B\*, with more than half of that from direct bookings. While bookings from centralized marketplaces will grow 1-2x over the next ten years, direct bookings will grow 5-10x. Dtravel is best positioned to capture this market opportunity.

Centralized marketplaces are expensive, and no alternatives have been able to solve the complexities of global payments and trust between operators and travelers. However, within Dtravel’s ecosystem, we can formalize this market by aligning economic incentives, making it more rewarding, safe, and easier for peer-to-peer bookings to flourish.

Holding TRVL allows for economic participation in the Dtravel ecosystem. The more operators enter the Dtravel ecosystem, the more valuable it becomes for travelers. The more travelers that enter the Dtravel ecosystem, the more valuable it becomes for operators. These network effects increase revenue, which will be used to buy back tokens, creating value for all TRVL holders. Together, these mechanisms will ensure robust utility and demand for TRVL and long-term value accrual. <br>

## Key Takeaways

1. **Dtravel’s ecosystem is the first implementation of TRVL utility.**
2. **Dtravel uses TRVL rewards to accelerate growth in the Dtravel ecosystem, increasing the formal market size for vacation rentals, especially direct bookings.**
3. **That growth leads to more revenue and TRVL buy-backs for long-term token value accrual.**

# TRVL Token Model Within Dtravel

Dtravel is a peer-to-peer vacation rental ecosystem powered by its native token TRVL. The TRVL token is used as an incentive to accelerate Dtravel’s growth, while enhancing the experience of holders inside the Dtravel ecosystem. This paper describes the token model, focusing on its relevance within Dtravel products and on how it applies to operators, travelers, and community participants.&#x20;

* Operators - vacation rental owners and managers who contribute their property listings and resources to the ecosystem.
* Travelers - anyone who uses the Dtravel ecosystem to discover and book vacation rentals directly with owners and operators.
* Community participants - can include any of the above groups and may be stakers and builders or those just passionate about supporting TRVL and Dtravel.

# TRVL Utility

TRVL token utility is founded on 3 pillars:

1. Staking - enhances the value of using Dtravel applications and generates rewards for TRVL holders via ecosystem revenue.
2. Currency for travel - when used for payments, TRVL unlocks discounts inside the Dtravel ecosystem.
3. Governance - used for creating and voting on Dtrips, and for choosing protocol and tokenomic parameters.

# TRVL Sustainable Token Model

The following diagram provides an overview of the TRVL token model for the Dtravel ecosystem. This token model applies to Dtravel Direct, Sensei AI, the Nite Protocol, and any other revenue sources generated within the Dtravel ecosystem. <br>

<figure><img src="https://lh7-us.googleusercontent.com/wbyPu-UisEMjvEXT4E1iOy6oDc9VaEv3auPOE-QhIeVUYylYzMjFSqDxa2DkmV6vQrJpTN7Iw-6JXhyqMDz8ykonv2T2fVWs6FY7QKIbvGIiXW8zgkbSiW4fB8QbqmVsehYLnXjAPiQb5HBNSg_dcpE" alt=""><figcaption><p>Dtravel Ecosystem</p></figcaption></figure>

1. Whenever any fees are paid in TRVL, they are discounted.
2. When fees are paid in fiat and other cryptocurrencies, they are used to buy back TRVL.
3. The fees converted to or paid in TRVL are split and allocated to:
   * Stake-to-Boost Vault
   * Stake-to-Earn Vault
   * TRVL Community Treasury
   * Burn Bin

The percentage of fees allocated to Staking Vaults, the TRVL Community Treasury, and Burn Bin are parameters chosen by the Dtravel DAO. The starting point for how revenue is split between categories is below:&#x20;

| Category                | Percentage of revenue | Notes                                                                                                                                                                |
| ----------------------- | --------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Stake-to-Boost Vault | 70% | Awarded to users (e.g. travelers and operators) who stake to boost booking giveback rewards. Reward distribution is dependent on how much TRVL they stake. |
| Stake-to-Earn Vault | 20% | Stakers may be required to perform tasks to earn rewards. An unstaking tax may be applied to incentivize long term holding. |
| TRVL Community Treasury | 5% | TRVL allocated to the Community Treasury is used to fund various initiatives. |
| Burn Bin | 5% | TRVL allocated to the Burn Bin is locked to reduce circulating supply. Funds can either be burned or unlocked and transferred to the Community Treasury by DAO vote. |

Note: This token model is sustainable in the sense that the output (distributions to the various categories) is always equal to the input (revenue).

<br>

# Impact of TRVL Utility and Token Model

The three pillars of TRVL utility generate strong demand for TRVL, whereas the token model is designed to reduce the circulating supply of TRVL.<br>

Discounted fees, rewards, and the possibility to vote to approve grants and choose the protocol and tokenomics parameters create demand for TRVL and encourage growth in fee-paying users.

The buyback removes TRVL from the market, reducing the circulating supply. Recyclable burning makes it harder for TRVL to be brought back into circulation by locking it. The staking vaults encourage users to keep their TRVL holdings out of circulation.

# Growth Incentive Programs

To accelerate growth and decentralization, Dtravel will use its Growth Fund (25% of total TRVL supply) to distribute additional incentives to participants. Because such incentives increase the circulating supply of TRVL, it is important to distribute them wisely, to participants who are bringing value to the Dtravel ecosystem.

For this reason, the growth incentive programs are based on a points system. Points are awarded for actions that add value to the Dtravel ecosystem. For this program, depending on how many points participants accumulate over a fixed period of time, they are entitled to a percentage of the TRVL rewards allocated to the program.&#x20;

Our first four pilot growth incentive programs are: booking mining, exploration, geographical density, and community building incentives.

####

# Booking Mining

The booking mining incentives system is based on the idea that running a Dtravel-powered property is, in specific ways, like running a blockchain mining node. Processing bookings mirrors validating blockchain transactions and producing blocks.&#x20;

Similarly to how proof-of-work rewards miners who contribute the most hash power, those with the most hash power win the block production competition more often and earn more rewards. Similarly, the booking mining incentives program rewards properties that secure the most booked nights. The top-ranked properties by booked nights within an epoch are recognized as winners, earning the most points. Winners will also receive enhanced visibility within Dtravel and a commemorative NFT for their achievement.

<figure><img src="/files/ycvbw4DkKG4XdaaDuKIW" alt=""><figcaption><p>Booking Mining vs Bitcoin Mining</p></figcaption></figure>

# Exploration

Travelers are also entitled to points rewards when completing a booking with a Dtravel-powered property listing. In this case, the goal is to incentivize travelers to discover and explore a wide range of Dtravel-powered properties. The more unique properties they book, the more points they earn. The growth in number of points a traveler receives per booked property is super-linear. Select geographies may entitle travelers to bonus points.

# Geographical Density

The rationale behind Geographical Density incentives is that Dtravel is a decentralized physical network (DePIN) of bookable properties. As with all physical networks, sufficiently dense coverage is critical for the network to be vibrant and self-sustainable. In the case of Dtravel, density refers to having a sufficient concentration of Dtravel-powered properties in a particular market to attract a critical mass of operators and travelers. Achieving density in certain cities is vital for the success of Dtravel in establishing a vibrant and diverse offering.

The highest geographical density incentive points will be awarded to operators who list new properties in destinations with high demand but fewer Dtravel-powered properties. The first property in a destination receives the most points, and the number of points received by subsequent properties decreases linearly with the number of Dtravel properties already listed in the same city until it becomes zero when the number of properties reaches a predefined target number proportional to the city's population.

This incentive program encourages early adoption of Dtravel by property operators since the earlier one joins, the more points one gets while ensuring geographical decentralization.

# Community Building

## **Social Media Incentives**

Travelers, operators, and community participants can earn points for actions including but not limited to connecting social media accounts, sharing details of the community growth incentives on social media, sharing details of Sensei on social media, following Dtravel social accounts, and completing a Dtravel ecosystem quiz.&#x20;

## **Onboarding Incentives**

Operators can earn points for actions that include creating active listings, creating a Dtravel smart wallet on an active listing, enabling crypto payments on an active listing, and enabling TRVL as a payment option on an active listing.&#x20;

## **Referral Incentives**

Individuals who refer operators who create active listings on Dtravel are entitled to earn points for each successful referral. A higher volume of referrals entitles the referrer to a points multiplier.&#x20;
